Enactment of NP-108-21

On October 16, 2021 the Federal Safety Regulations NP-108-21 "Requirements to Justification of Strength of the Reactor Unit Vessel, Equipment, Pipelines and Reactor Internals of the Lead-Cooled Nuclear Power Installation" is coming into effect.

The Regulations covers lead-cooled nuclear power installations and stipulates the requirements to justification of strength of the equipment, pipelines, reactor internals, reactor unit vessel, as well as their components being in constant or periodic contact with the lead coolant and (or) shielding gas upstream of the first cutoff valve or hydraulic lock of the reactor unit vessel, as well as equipment and pipelines of the second steam-water circuit outcoming from the steam generator to the second valve on the side of the steam generator (cutoff or check valve).

The requirements of NP-108-21 cover elements and their components subject to design-basis loads and falling within the Federal Safety Regulations in the field of atomic energy use "Rules for Design and Safe Operation of the Reactor Unit Vessel, Equipment, Pipelines and Reactor Internals of a Lead-Cooled Nuclear Power Installation" (NP-107-21) approved by the Order of the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia of March 24, 2021 No. 112 (registered by the Ministry of Justice of Russia on May 28, 2021 under the registry No. 63670), for which the temperature under normal operation and anticipated operational occurrences, including design-basis accidents, shall not exceed:

• 650°С for metal elements;
• 700°С for concrete elements (concrete filler).

The requirements of the Regulations are binding for operating organizations, as well as organizations performing works and rendering services in the field of atomic energy use.
